A Mosaic of Wonders: the Baroque Cities of Val di Noto

There are places that are not only visited: they are contemplated. They are savored. They are lived slowly. South-eastern Sicily is one of these. A strip of land where architecture and light sculpt the landscapes, giving life to an unrepeatable atmosphere.

VAL DI NOTO: A MOSAIC OF BEAUTY, HISTORY AND AUTHENTICITY

Around Noto and Siracusa, the “stone sisters” – Ragusa Ibla, Modica, Scicli – form a perfect mosaic of beauty, history and authenticity. Small baroque treasure chests nestled between sunny valleys, secret gardens and balconies overlooking the silence.

Ragusa Ibla enchants with its flower-filled stairways, aristocratic palaces and the majestic Cathedral of San Giorgio, which dominates the square like a theater curtain. A few steps from the monument stands Duomo, Ciccio Sultano's two-Michelin-star restaurant that redefines the most intimate essence of the island’s cuisine.

Every corner of this city is a natural set, where you can abandon yourself to beauty.

Modica, a jewel included in 2002 in the UNESCO World Heritage List, stretches between two valleys with the elegance of a baroque drape. Here, it is possible to visit a pearl, the Church of San Nicolò inferiore, the most preserved example of a rock architecture of Byzantine origin that has left important traces not only in the Iblea area but, more widely, throughout the island. A small and unusual space capable of telling the greatness of an art that becomes a prayer of stone.

A must-have is the tasting of Modica Chocolate, which reveals the secrets and history of a unique confectionery tradition in the world. In this city, artisanal processing is transformed into a sensory experience to be savored, experimented and treasured.

Scicli, secret and wonderful, reveals its soul in noble palaces such as Palazzo Beneventano, defined as “the most beautiful baroque palace in Sicily" , nestled in an urban context that seems hand-painted.

Just inaugurated, in May 2025, the new Museum of Contemporary Art (located in the renovated spaces of the former Convent of Carmine) is a jewel not to be missed. The structure opens to the public with an anthological exhibition dedicated to Emilio Isgrò, one of the most important contemporary Italian artists, including unpublished installations and works from prestigious public and private collections.
